Overview
A short but rewarding journey that joins the cultural heritage of Penjikent with one of the best-known trekking routes in the Fann Mountains.
After the archaeological site of Sarazm, the city's museums and its bazaar, the route heads into the mountains to the Kulikalon Lakes and on over Alaudin Pass (3,860m) to the Alaudin Lakes, with views towards Chimtarga Peak (5,489m).
The trek is supported by a mountain guide and pack animals, so you carry only a daypack.

The itinerary
Day 1Samarkand border – Penjikent cultural tour
Meet your guide at the Samarkand–Penjikent border crossing. After border formalities, visit Sarazm, one of the oldest settlements in Central Asia and once a centre of trade linking Central Asia, Persia and the Indus Valley.
Continue to the Penjikent City Museum for the story of the Sogdian civilisation, the Rudaki Museum dedicated to the founder of classical Persian literature, and the local bazaar. Traditional Tajik lunch at a local restaurant, then time to relax before a homemade dinner.

Day 2Penjikent – Artuch Alpine Camp – Kulikalon Lakesapprox. 9km | 4–5 hours | approx. +650m
Drive around two hours along the Zeravshan Valley to Artuch Base Camp (2,200m), meet the mountain guide, donkey handler and support staff, and prepare for the trek.
The trail climbs gradually through juniper forest, alpine meadows and past mountain streams to the Kulikalon Basin, with camp near Bibijonat or Dushokha Lake and free time around the lakes.

Day 3Kulikalon Lakes – Alaudin Pass – Alaudin Lakesapprox. 11km | 6–7 hours | high point 3,860m
A steady climb to Alaudin Pass with regular rest stops and wide views over the Kulikalon Basin and the high Fann peaks.
Descend to the Alaudin Lakes (approx. 2,800m) and camp near the lakeshore.

Day 4Alaudin Lakes – Vertical Alpine Base – transfer
An easy downhill walk to Vertical Alpine Base, lunch, then a transfer to Dushanbe (approx. 4–5 hours), Penjikent (approx. 2.5–3 hours) or Khujand (approx. 5–6 hours), with drop-off at a hotel, airport or border crossing.
