What to Pack for a Trekking Trip in Kyrgyzstan
Pack for a big daily temperature swing: strong sun and warm afternoons, then near-freezing nights at altitude, even in midsummer. A layered system, genuinely waterproof outerwear and a warm sleeping bag cover most of what Kyrgyzstan asks of you.
Resupply options are limited once you leave the towns, so bring anything you rely on — prescription medication, spare contact lenses, specific batteries — with you.
Clothing and layers
- Base layers: two synthetic or merino tops, one long-sleeved.
- Insulation: fleece or light down jacket for camp and passes.
- Shell: waterproof, breathable jacket and overtrousers.
- Legs: quick-drying trekking trousers; shorts optional.
- Warmth extras: hat, gloves and a buff — all used more than people expect.
- Sun protection: brimmed hat, high-factor sun cream, category 3–4 sunglasses.
Footwear
Broken-in boots with ankle support suit the loose, uneven ground. Bring a second pair of lightweight shoes or sandals for camp and for river crossings, plus several pairs of proper trekking socks.
Camping and sleeping
On supported trips, tents, group cooking equipment and often sleeping mats are provided. Confirm what is included before buying anything expensive.
- Sleeping bag rated to around -5°C comfort for summer high camps.
- Insulated sleeping mat if not supplied.
- Head torch with spare batteries.
- One-litre bottles or a bladder, plus a water treatment method.
Health, documents and money
- Personal first aid: blister care, painkillers, rehydration salts, any prescriptions.
- Travel insurance covering trekking at the maximum altitude on your route.
- Passport, plus digital and paper copies stored separately.
- Cash in small denominations; card acceptance drops away outside cities.
What you can leave behind
Heavy books, multiple camera bodies, large toiletries and a change of clothes for every day. Where luggage travels by horse or vehicle there are usually weight limits, and a lighter bag is easier for everyone.

- A light down or synthetic insulated jacket earns its place at high camps, where evenings can drop close to freezing even in July.
- Can I buy trekking kit in Bishkek?
- Bishkek has outdoor shops and rental options, which can cover gaps such as a sleeping bag or mat. Specialist footwear and technical clothing are better bought at home in your own size.
- Is tap water safe to drink?
- Treat water from streams and taps. A filter, purification tablets or boiling all work; carrying capacity for at least two litres is sensible.
